Fish
Manitoba Fisheries' mandate is to ensure sustainable use of the fisheries resource. Management programs are developed to provide the greatest benefits to Manitobans, by maintaining or enhancing fish populations and habitat, monitoring harvest and habitat alterations, and allocating resources for the best return.
Manitoba’s Recreational Angling Strategy
Manitoba’s Recreational Angling Strategy was released on May 26, 2021 and included a suite of angling regulation changes that aim to increase angling opportunities and enhance protection of Manitoba’s valuable fish populations.
The public engagement for Manitoba’s Recreational Angling Strategy took place from May 26 to June 30, 2021.
A “What We Heard” report was released on November 1, 2021, outlining the modifications made to the Strategy based on the feedback received during engagement process.
As of April 1, 2023, the new angling regulations are now in effect.

Sustainable Fisheries Management
The Manitoba government has a mandate to secure the sustainability and certification of our commercial fisheries. Manitoba continues to advance this mandate by conducting annual assessments of fish populations for many of our largest commercial fisheries, as well as, developing stock assessment reports and fisheries management plans.
